Shut it Down

Let’s jump right in! Here’s what you need to know about the possible government shutdown. Essentially government funding expires today at midnight. When the clock strikes 12 ET the new fiscal year starts, which is October 1. If congress fails to pass legislation by then deciding all the coins for the country, the government shuts down. The gag is, if there’s a shutdown it will occur over the weekend. Meaning, we won’t really see the impact till the beginning of the week which is Monday.

What exactly happens when the government shuts down? Well, Sunshine, I’m glad you asked. Essentially you can expect the following:

  • You can’t reach most federal employees for questions or support
  • No issuing of marriage licenses
  • Understaffed or no staff for National Parks
  • SNAP and WIC access lost when funding runs out
  • Head Start may cease
  • Meals on Wheels will be interrupted
  • Federal law enforcements may not operate fully

Now is this a shut down in the sense that all things come full stop? Well, no. However, the disruption that will happen across the country is enough to negatively impact the lives of many. By the time you rad this, Congress will only have hours left to make a decision. I hope for all involved, they do the needful.
